In a recent blog post highlighting the so-called “state of the game” for Destiny 2, Bungie outlined many upcoming quality of life changes that would be coming to the shared world shooter. However, it also took time to explain the XP scaling system that caused players to experience diminishing returns on experience earned.

This system was the subject of much controversy, especially Bungie didn’t clarify that it was in place. The fact that it tied into Bright Engrams, which could be purchased with real money, led players to believe that this was meant to incentivise micro-transactions.

Bungie noted that, “Our intention was to keep slower-paced activities as rewarding as high intensity grinding without confusing variations in displayed XP values, but the silent nature of the mechanic betrayed the expectation of transparency that you have for Destiny 2.”

Currently, the developer is looking to address the XP balance. “In a future update, we intend to link these internal and display-only values together for greater consistency, and to ensure that when changes are made they are accurately reflected everywhere we report them.”

It also noted that XP gain was “too slow for some activities” with the current value of 160,000 XP. Further tuning will be made but XP boosts from consumables the bonus obtained the Well Rested buff will remain the same. Over time, players can expect to hear more about how XP gain will be tuned.

What are your thoughts on Bungie’s handling of the whole XP scaling system? Let us know in the comments.
