Destiny 2 - Season of the Seraph

Having gone through an outage because of an errant update this week, Destiny 2 is finally playable once more. Developer Bungie has elaborated on its decision to take the game offline while fixing a major bug that caused players to lose progress on its official blog.

Essentially, after hotfix 6.3.0.5 was released, players were noticing that they were losing progress on certain Triumphs, Seals and Catalysts. Since these are all important aspects of progression in Destiny 2, Bungie decided to take the game down to investigate the issue.

“We discovered that the issue was caused when some currently incompletable EDZ and Nessus Triumphs were moved from Forsaken into the archived Triumphs section,” the studio said on its blog. The post goes into quite a few technical details about how the studio managed to isolate and fix the issue.

“Once we identified that the issue resulted in a loss of player state, we took the game down and rolled back the player database while we investigated how to remove the dangerous change from the build,” says the post. “Last night we constructed a patch for 6.3.0.5 that removed the specific change that was causing the issue, tested it, and deployed it to live.”

It is worth noting that as part of bringing the game back online, some players lost a bit of progress. According to Bungie, all player accounts had to be rolled back to their status at 8:20am PST on January 24. This means that progress made between 8:20am and 11am that day is lost. Any purchases made in that period have also been refunded.

Destiny 2 is currently gearing up for the launch of its new expansion, Lightfall, which is set to come to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 28. The new expansion’s raid is set to become available on March 10.
